African Americans' education in South during Reconstruction

In class, we learned about the freed slaves' education in the South during the reconstruction. After the Civil War, most slaves were freed and they had nowhere to go. They were in desperate need for jobs, money, and supplies.

To the blacks, education was the only way to get good jobs, to provide for their families, and to live a life of good quality. But at that time, the government didn't provide public education. There were no such thing as public schools in the US after the Civil War; schools were provided for by churches, and private businesses. But they weren' t free and the poor whites and blacks couldn't afford it...not with the conditions they were living in during the reconstruction. Finally, in 1863, this changed as the Congress passed Freeman Bureau which provided public education to everyone without any payments necessary. This opened more doors for the African Americans, and the poor whites who were freed from slavery after the Civil War.

The misery of the African Americans was far from over....they were still suppressed by the others. Their education was limited and they weren't given all kinds of opportunities as the whites. It was almost exactly the same way in the South during the Civil War. The white people were trying to oppress the minority population by restricting the education being given to the African Americans. They were expecting to benefit by maintaining race segregation and belittling the innocent African Americans. As a result, the blacks rebelled and they got equal opportunities to education and other significant rights.

Today, China showed similarities between education with the South during the reconstruction. The Chinese government effectively limited the internet access to everyone living in the country. The government wants to continue to exert its control over the Chinese citizens without resistance and it believes to do so, it has to limit the flow of information through the society. The Chinese government feels that the less the public knows, the better since they can easily manipulate them to do things to their preferences. As result of limited education, everyday, people are trying to develop a new proxy that will be able to bypass the security system placed by the government to prevent internet access. The Chinese citizens are beginning to rise against the government as result of much of the limitations being placed upon them.

Basically, the education being provided to the freed slaves in the South and the internet restriction in modern China are very similar in terms of humanity. The African Americans were treated very badly during the reconstruction after the Civil War. I hope you enjoyed my blog! Thanks.

Wow nicely put! I thought it was great that you described the connection between the restriction on education with blacks during the reconstruction and china. During class I didn't really understand what Mrs.Garber was saying until she connected it with our school restricting the certain internet websites. I mean I understood it was bad but not like that or even worse. Seriously nice blog!

You made a great connection between the education of blacks during the reconstruction, and China. China is a very interesting to learn about, due to humanity. There are so many restrictions, like there was with blacks education. For example, I think you are only limited to ONE child in China. That is completely unfair, and seems so unreal. In America we are entitled to just about everything.

Knowledge equals power, so I can definitely see why the oppressed African Americans during Reconstruction rebelled. If I were in their shoes during that time period, I would have done the same thing because no person should be deprived of an education, regardless of race, age, gender, or ethnicity. Today, the high school drop-out rate nationwide is a lot higher than it should be, which is ironic in some ways. I liked how you connected Reconstruction to China because it seems like the Chinese government is so strict about work and education. Yet, they're restricting public information.

Nice blog. You were right about their education and how they really didn't have anywhere to go after they were freed because they were never given any kind of resources or housing. Blacks knew they need to provide for their families and the only to do that was through a good job. And also with that women were a big help to the blacks and poor whites because they provided places for them and helped them learn such things like how to read and write, which gave them a little advantage. good job. :]

I enjoyed reading your blog. I think its pretty messed up that the governtment wouldnt provide them with school. It makes me mad how bad they were treated just for being black or white people who were poor. Everyone deserves an education. Your connections between blacks and China were also interesting.

This was a very good blog about the African American education in the South. This was helpful for me, because I did not know that in 1863 Congress passed the Freedman’s Bureau. I belief the reason why African American children education was limited, was simply some people did not want them to be successful because. Education is simply one of the keys needed to have a successful life. And also learned the process of limiting information to people happens in China today, by limiting the access of the internet.

I liked how you added the info about China because it really showed me that problems aren't just happening to blacks and whites it happening to other races too. All we hear about is pretty much blacks and whites and you made a very good connection. I also noticed that education seemed to be a big factor in whether people succeeded or not. That is basically the same thing today..without an education you are not going to get very far in the world.
